FaceApp is being developed by a small team out of Saint-Petersburg, Russia.
words of his creator
“We developed a new technology that uses neural networks to modify a face on any photo while keeping it photo-realistic. For example, it can add a smile, change gender and age, or just make you more attractive,” says founder and CEO Yaroslav Goncharov, a former head of department at Yandex who is funding the project out of his own pocket. which is a very respected and daring step at the same time because in today’s worlds most of the companies and startups are not starting their product before an invested by the angel investors etc.
photo editing apps are not new but the fact is the if an AI app will tweak your selfies by using neural networks then for sure it makes a difference. But we will see how the masses will adopt it.
Meitu is a popular photo editing app which turn your image into an animated character and there is prisma which is also from Russia and yet it is another popular photo editing app which applies filter to your image and another one is MSQRD which masks your face. But what sets FaceApp apart from all of them is it tweaks your selfies without even changing a single thing in your image. Means no effects or transitions. We will see more thing coming in varieties.
In an interview with Techcrunch Goncharov said, FaceApp is taking a different tack by not applying a filter to selfies. Rather it’s using deep learning technology to alter the photo itself.
Countries where it’s been making the biggest splash so far include Japan, Netherlands, Hong Kong, Norway, Russia, and Argentina, with Goncharov noting the app has topped the App Store charts in four countries, and made top iOS app in the Photo & Video category in seven so far.
Till now it is only available on Appstore. Hope we can see its new version on android too. But pray that it will not make a late entry like PRISMA. IF this latency release on Android will happen then Android users not to rejoice now.
