Wi-Fi has become a basic requirment nowdays. Without internet we feel helpless. Here are are some ways to solve some common problems.
Tip 1: Keep It At The Center Of The House
This is the one of the simplest ways to increase the Wi-Fi coverage. Most users prefer to keep their router in a corner probably near in a window to minimize the wire clutter nut it reduces the area covered by router because Wi-Fi signal spreads omni-directionally.Hence try to keep the router at the center of house at a height(it further improves the signal strength).
Tip 2: Keep The Router Away From Disturbance Causing Devices
This is one of the most important things.Keep your router away from devices that can distort its signal such as cord-less phone, microwave ovens , other routers ,printers or basically anything that works in the frequency range of the router.
If you have neighbors, their routers may be interfering with yours and causing the signal to degrade. Wireless routers can operate on a number of different channels, and you want yours on a channel with as little interference as possible. Use a tool like Wi-Fi Stumbler or Wi-Fi Analyzer to find the perfect channel in your house.
Tip 3: Enable Guest Network
Whenever some friends or relatives comes to your home are you tired of giving your home Wi-Fi password and then worry about your home Wi-Fi used without permission. From next time on just enable the guest network. It can be done by logging into your router and under the wireless tab you can see an option of guest network. You can give name to this network ,set password and also limit the no. of users who can connect simultaneously. After they are gone just shut off the guest network and use your own network.
Tip 4: Use Repeaters To Increase The Range
If you want to increase the area covered by your router use repeaters.Repeater takes the Wi-Fi signal from your router and ‘repeats’ it to improve coverage area. The WPS method is the simplest way to connect a repeater: Enable WPS on the router and press the WPS button on the repeater. Everything is automatically configured in just a minute. There are several options available from D-Link, NetGear, TP-Link priced at Rs 1,000 onwards. If you have an old (but functional) router lying around, you may also be able to use it as a repeater — though this requires a bit of configuration in the settings page.
Another great way to extend your range is to hack your router and install the DD-WRT firmware. Not only will it give you a ton of great security features and other enhancements, but it gives you the option to boost your transmitting power. This can be dangerous for your router, but most routers can handle an increase up to 70 mW without causing any issues, and you’ll be able to access your network from much further away!
Tip 5: Change Your Wi-Fi Password Regularly
Do you change your password regularly? No!
Change it regularly , so that other people don’t steal your data and also bring your speed down.
Tip 6: Control Bandwidth -Hogging applications
If someone in your house regularly video chats, plays online games, torrents files, or uses services like Netflix, they may be hogging bandwidth and making the internet slower for everyone else. Luckily, you can use something called Quality of Service—or QoS for short—to reign in those bandwidth hogs. With QoS, you can prioritize certain applications (say, video chat) over others (like video games) so the most important applications get the bandwidth they deserve.
After going through these tweaks, you should find that your home Wi-Fi is faster, more reliable, and more secure than ever.
